The Indian Paradox : Democracy, Communism and National Identity

On the 10th October 2008, the historic deal was signed between India and the USA. A landmark occasion as India began to be recognised as a nuclear weapon state, a privilege that enabled gain access to critical technologies. The core of agreement focuses on the non proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The deal opens the door for import of Uranium which further leads to peaceful and civilian use of nuclear energy. The deal also strengthens the future image of India at international level.

However, being democratic country with a political instability as a feature of Manmohan Singh's government took a unique turn. Criticism was expressed in parliament but the irony is that the opposition party led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji supported the deal but coalition parties threatened the cabinet for withdrawing the support. In my opinion, this is a common situation but the issue that concerns me most is the fact that primary opposition came from communist party also known as "left front". They were against the deal as it was unable to safeguard India's indigenous nuclear program. However, the government survived a confidence vote in the parliament. Perhaps, it looks normal when communist party is functioning in democracy but if you compare the core values of democracy that really sound anti-communist then how both can work together.

On comparing the core values of democracy and socialism or communalism, we observe that there is a conflict and one cannot function with another. Democratic state provides freedom, Liberty, privacy but this is not the very case with communalism.

If we study the case of the USSR and its formation we observe the purpose of unifying these regions was only based on the ideology of increasing social welfare and benefit for common people. There was no binding force prevalent while its formation, regions with different cultures and languages came together for a common goal.

[Note :- India is also the country of diverse cultures and languages but India enjoys the status of rashtra which translates nation since Vedic period and the common hegemony was prevalent even during Ramayan (if dive deeper Ashwamedha Yagya and Chakravarti Raja)]

USSR was collapsed due to many reasons but the National and cultural identity of that particular region was also the major reason. If we compare the current situation of India we see that our constitution and the way powers are exercised is motivated by the spirit of nationalism as a binding force, together with inclusive growth and stakeholder theory while making sure that maximum benefit is reached to common people. But India was divided in 1947 even there was a mass colonial struggle against British. Well it is a legit argument but it should be noted that fire of partition was built by religion fundamentalism and Pakistan is the living image of that ideology.

(It is important to highlight that both of these ideologies are not purely nationalist as nationalism is a way complex process.)

Economic equality is another value of Marx theory and indeed the goal of sustainable development. Perhaps this amount of communist attitude is needed to act as a watch dog for the government.

However, democratic State makes a special provision for good governance by ensuring transparency, responsibility and accountability. It amends laws for a society where everyone is equal before and there is reduced amount of inequalities. Moreover, some sort of inequalities will continue to exist as we can reduce it but the line of uniformity does not exist in applied theories. In addition, I have not heard about any communist States enjoying uniform equality with an extremely positive state.

Freedom of speech and expression one of my favourite core of democracy through which I am sharing my opinions. Every individual expresses that opinion in a democratic world another legit argument. I want to conclude my views which one question only, can you give me a name of a socialist state with opposition party that supports democracy. It doesn't exist in the real world, if opinions do not match the death penalty, it's the only solution. Violating human rights then how democratic and communist work together?

P.S : - Countries like Sweden, Norway and Denmark became a great example of this partnership often criticized due to the left front's inability to solve problems (related to human rights, immigration, welfare inefficient policies)and in many situations these are fueled by them.

Climate Change: a great crises that we will defeat.

“Climate change is a terrible problem, and it needs to be solved. It deserves to be a huge priority.”-Bill Gates, Founder of Microsoft. Do you experience intense heat more often than your parents and grandparents? It must be a ‘NO’. During those days heat was not severe and if we analyze the scenario 20 years ago, people were able to live without air conditioners. But why are we experiencing this weather pattern? Well, this is persuaded by human activities that cause climate change. As per as United Nations, climate change is regarded as one of the greatest crises in the world.
